THE LIGHTING INDUSTRY INTRODUCES UV-C TECHNOLOGY TO FIGHT AGAINST COVID-19
Research shows that UV-C radiation can deactivate the SARS-CoV-2 virus, which is the virus that causes the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19). For decades UV-C lamps has been effectively used as a disinfectant for air, water, and nonporous surfaces to reduce the spread of bacteria and viruses earning the name “germicidal” lamps. The popularity of UV-C technology has increased due to the recent COVID-19 outbreak and more industries are using UV-C radiation to reduce the spread of this virus. Some examples of industries using UV-C technology to combat the pandemic are listed below;
- Hospitals;
- Hotels;
- Aviation;
- Offices;
- Public Spaces; and
- Homes.
Advantages of UV-C Radiation:
Compared to other disinfection methods, UV-C radiation has a number of advantages:
- UV-C radiation does not require chemicals and toxic compounds.
- Pathogens are unable to form resistance to UV-C radiation.
- The radiation could render pathogens harmless in a matter of seconds.
- The treatment’s relatively short duration does not change the properties of a product.
- UV-C radiation leaves no residue or discolouration on surfaces.
- Ozone is not produced in the corresponding range above 240 nanometres.
